What to Say on a Video Chat With Someone New (Openers That Work)

On video, the first five seconds do most of the work. The good news: you do not need a clever line, just a friendly one that is easy to answer.

Before you say anything: be easy to talk to

On a video chat, people decide in a moment whether to stay. Most of that is not words. Face a window or a lamp so your face is lit, hold the phone at eye level, and smile when the call connects. A person who looks relaxed is a person others want to talk to.

Openers that work on a video chat

The best first lines are about the person in front of you and are easy to answer:

  • "Hi! Where are you calling from? It looks sunny there."
  • "I like your headphones. What are you listening to?"
  • "Is that a guitar behind you? Do you play?"
  • "What time is it where you are? It's almost midnight here."
  • "First call of the day for me. How is yours going?"

Notice what they have in common: each one shows you looked, and each gives the other person something simple to say back.

Openers to skip

  • "Hey" and nothing else. It hands all the work to the other person.
  • "How old are you? Where exactly do you live?" Too personal, too soon.
  • Comments about someone's body. They end calls, and they break the rules.
  • Asking for their number or another app in the first minute.

Keep it going: questions with a story

Once you are past hello, swap yes-or-no questions for ones with a story behind them. Instead of "Do you like your job?", try "What is the best part of your day?". Instead of "Do you travel?", try "Where is the last place that surprised you?". Then listen, and ask one more question about the answer. That second question is where real conversations start.

When it goes quiet

Silence on video feels longer than it is, for both of you. A few easy rescues:

  • Name it with a smile: "Okay, my mind just went blank. Your turn to ask something!"
  • Show something: your view, your pet, the snack you are eating.
  • Play a quick game: "Two truths and a lie, go."

Ending a call kindly

Not every call clicks, and that is fine. A simple "It was nice to meet you, have a good evening!" before you tap Next leaves both of you feeling good. If you did enjoy it, say so, and follow them on Chatiwi so you can message later.
